Happy Balentimes Day!

The only celebrating of Valentine's Day that I did was giving Bug a big hug after he woke me up with a "Happy Balentimes Day!". That's really the only thing about the holiday, and I use that term lightly, that I enjoy: Having kids to share it with. I skipped class last Thursday to help Bug with his cards, and he really enjoyed it so it was totally worth it.

Other than that, I just don't like Valentine's Day. When I was growing up, my dad would give me and my sister flowers or candy or something, and that was great! It has never been about having a date for me, and I do kind of feel like Hallmark has capitalized on the idea. I mean, that's awesome for their business and more power to them, but it doesn't make me want to go out and buy conversation hearts, which by the way I find disgusting.  There was one year in high school when I had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day and he went to a different school. We hadn't been dating long, and I really hadn't expected any sort of gifts, but he sent me flowers. At school. I was 14 years old, and unbelievably embarrassed! That was the one and only time Valentine's Day has been a boyfriend/girlfriend thing. Charming Husband and I have never celebrated it together. We became parents together in February and we got married in February, and I think that is enough reasons to celebrate love this month!

Great post. The commercialization of holidays is out of control. What really matters is what should be celebrated.
